Child Find

What is Child Find?

Child Find is a nationwide effort to locate all children with disabilities, birth through 21, who are not receiving educational services.  In Louisiana, the responsibility for finding children from birth to 3 years falls on Early Steps.  The responsibility for finding children 3 - 21 years falls on the local school system and is part of Special Education in Louisiana school.

If your child is enrolled in school, there are well-established procedures involving the Student Assistance Team (SAT) at your child's school.  Your first step is to contact your child's teacher.  The form below (Request for Teacher Conference) may be useful in documenting and clarifying your concerns.

If your child is 3-5 years of age, and not currently enrolled in school, the form below (Preschool Referral & Referral Source Interview) may be used to request a screening and/or evaluation for your child.

This process is designed to identify, locate, and evaluate children who may be in need of special education services and are not currently enrolled in school.  All screenings and evaluations are free of charge.
